Olympian launches male cancer run

As part of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s annual Men’s Cancer Campaign, which will run from 8 June to 12 July, athlete Joslyn Hoyte-Smith has launched the 2009 Run in the Park – a 10k Race and 3k Fun Run – and will be running the event herself.
Jos, who won a bronze medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, has just been announced as a patron of the charity.
“I am absolutely delighted to be a patron of this wonderful charity. I am doing this for my Dad who, despite sadly losing his life to cancer, is still my guiding light and because of his experience, raising awareness about cancer amongst men is something I feel strongly about. The Men’s Cancer Campaign, coupled with an event like the 10k, is an ideal way to reach out to them and show our support to the research, treatment and care for men's cancers.
“We now need as many people as possible to join me and sign up to take part to highlight these issues and raise vital funds. Anyone can enter and we don’t care how fast you run or how long it takes, we just want you to be involved.”
The month-long campaign will include a number of events particularly aimed at men including golf days and football tournaments and will culminate in the Run in the Park on Sunday, 12 July at Graves Park, Sheffield. Rachel Thorpe, director or Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “There are already a number of runs and walks organised to highlight women’s cancers so we thought it was about time that men got an equal share of the spotlight”.

Congratulations – you run us proud!
The sun was shining for our incredible team of over 70 runners who took part in the Sheffield Half Marathon and London Marathon on Sunday, 26th April. Even our very own Dr Peter Kirkbride could be found running alongside the thousands of charity runners who were pounding the streets of London. Thank you for your dedication and commitment and for choosing to run for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.
Every step was worthwhile, as every penny raised from your hard earned sponsorship will be helping people living with cancer in our region. Your support is vital to us; thank you again on behalf of all the staff and patients here at Weston Park Hospital and the Cancer Charity.
We hope you had a fun and memorable day!
What the papers had to say
Run in the Park
Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is excited to introduce our new ‘Run in the Park’ event for 2009. This 10k Race and 3k Fun Run will take place at Graves Park, Sheffield on Sunday, 12th July 2009 and will support our Men’s Cancer Campaign.
Help us raise vital funds and promote awareness of male-specific cancer here in our region. So, pull on your trainers, get involved and run for your dad, granddad, husband, brother, boyfriend, uncle or friend – together we can take positive steps and help make a real difference to the work that Weston Park Hospital dedicates to helping men living with cancer.
“This is my charity. I am running in memory of my Dad who was always there for me during his cancer treatment. I urge you to take part in this run and help Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.”

Triple Challenge
Congratulations to Nigel Sanderson who was the successful bidder for our London Marathon charity place (kindly donated by Keep on Running, Sheffield).
Nigel will be taking part in a ‘Triple Challenge’ to raise vital funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity by taking part in the London Marathon, cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats and completing L’Etape (the Tour de France stage up Mont Ventoux). We wish Nigel all the very best!
“My dad died of prostate cancer in August 2007. In his memory I am undertaking a triple challenge over 3 months this spring and summer to raise money for the hospital. The care the doctors and nurses showed not only my father but also the rest of our family over his final days was truly amazing and I want to raise as much money as possible for them”
